050 – Drummer’s Day: Steve Moriarty (2/2)

Steve Moriarty is a drummer who has played in many bands, but most notably in the Seattle punk band The Gits. In part two of this interview we cover the details surrounding the tragic rape and murder of the Gits lead singer, Mia Zapata in 1993, how the surviving Gits went on to form a new band, and eventually play and tour with Joan Jett as a way to raise funds for the murder investigation. We cover the murder trial and conviction, the making of the Gits documentary film, and listen to tracks from Steve’s many subsequent bands since the Gits including the Dancing French Liberals of 48, Evil Stig which is the name of the Joan Jett project, St. Bushmills’ Choir, the Pinkos, and Blonde Mexicans.

Dave Dalton has been playing music since the 1980′s. He started out in the punk bands Screaming Bloody Marys, and Cell Block 5, and is now diversifying his sound after picking up the dobro. His current projects include the Irish Folk rock band Ol’ Cheeky Bastards, the acoustic busker punk band Pissed Off Punks (POPS), as well as solo performance. Erik Core interviews Dave about his past, his many different projects, and we capture a live in-studio performance by Dave. Gregg Inhofer is a singer-songwriter, pianist, and vocalist who has played a significant role in the Minneapolis music scene, and is a member of the Minnesota Rock and Country Music Hall of Fame. We talk with Gregg about his early career with Pepper Fog, This Oneness, Olivia Newton-John, and Soldiers of Fortune (featuring Jesse Ventura), his recording experience with Bob Dylan (“Blood on the Tracks”), his part in the annual John Lennon Tribute concert, his television and radio ad recordings, his work as musical director for writer Dick Wilson (7 musicals), and about his personal rebirth after a turbulent time in his life. Gregg also talks about his solo work and new album “Music for the Upright Walking”. His latest project showcases his talents from a man who has always been in a support role, but now shines bright as the front man, featuring a mix of rock, r&b, and pop sensibilities over a jazz rhythm section.

Bill Collins is a guitarist, singer/songwriter, and music teacher, who has performed for over 35 years, playing everything from hardcore punk to children’s music (Irish, Rockabilly, Ska, Folk, Blues, Metal, Reggae, Country, Rap, and nearly every kind of Rock ‘n’ Roll). He has made music with the best, gigged in sixteen countries and most U.S. states, and holds more than thirty releases under his belt. In 2005 he began performing music that supports Progressive Political causes, especially the Labor Union Movement. Ron Shock is a comedian with one hell of a life story. His career path includes priest in training, chain gang member, attempted jewel thief and subsequent guest at a maximum security penitentiary, computer programmer in the U.S. Army, and Vice President of a Fortune 500 company. At age 40 he had an epiphany, and became a stand-up comedian. We talk with Ron about his life, love of music, job as concert financer for the Australian Odyssey Festival, affair with one of James Brown’s backup singers, and about his experience as an opening act for Ringo Starr. Part 2 of 2.

042 – B.O.B Fest: Kate Knox

Erik Core interviews Kate Knox about her role as an organizer for the international punk rock festival BOBFEST. The BOB stands for Bremen – Germany, Oakland – California USA, and Bath – England and every couple of years the festival rotates between these three cities. Folks come from all over to get together and enjoy lots of live music, attend events like picnics and art shows, and help raise money for friends in need. The festival is organized by committee which coordinates the venues, schedules the bands, sells merchandise, and handles other logistics necessary for putting on a major event. Kate Knox has been helping to organize the festival since its inception in the mid 90′s.

Singer-songwriter Crystal Monee Hall is perhaps the hardest working person in music. The Virginia-born native came to Oakland by way of New York, where she spent several years singing in the Broadway musical Rent. Her debut album River Train is a mix of folk, soul, gospel, and rock. We talk to Crystal about River Train, her love of church choir, work as a backup singer for stars like Elton John, and we get to hear her perform some of her songs in studio. You can catch Crystal live, and on tour with the Mickey Hart (Grateful Dead) band, the Jazz Mafia, and others.

040 – 100 Concerts: J.P.Kallio

J.P. Kallio is a Finnish born singer-songwriter best known for his work in the traditional irish folk band Sliotar. This however is the story of his new band JPKallio.com, a Dublin based indie rock band that mixes classic and punk rock to form their basis. The band features J.P. on vocals and guitar, Tomek Jastrebski on bass, and Sebastian Bachowski on drums. J.P. talks about his new band’s goal to play their first 100 concerts, while writing a blog in the hopes of sharing their experience in the music industry with others. Chuck Lindo‘s current projects include The American Professionals, and the indie rock band Actionslacks. Chuck hails from the St. Louis punk band The Nukes, the surf-inspired Jumbo Shrimp (featuring Dead Kennedy’s East Bay Ray and Klaus Flouride), and alt rock band Dryspell. In 2007, Chuck founded music house Jingle This with partner John Schulte. They specialize in composing contemporary music for advertising while keeping one foot firmly in the past, fighting to keep the idea of the old fashioned jingle alive. Josh Almond interviews Chuck about his past, his current projects, his business, and all things in between. When not performing, writing, recording, or touring, Chuck enjoys staring at the wall and thinking of nothing.

Carole Sauter joins us today on Music Life Radio to talk about her personal history, and relationship with music. She is a flute player in the Gateway Concert Band, a community-based concert group, and she is the mother of MLR’s host and executive producer, Dan Sauter. Having survived two husbands, a career in teaching, Carole now spends most of her time creating art – from art books, to calligraphy projects, music, and even poetry. She never lets a setback slow her down, and is truly relentless in life.

036 – Tales of Tobolowsky: Stephen Tobolowsky

Stephen Tobolowsky is a master storyteller, an actor appearing in over 150 movies and TV shows, and is a man with a remarkable musical background. We talk to Stephen about his upbringing, his early band Cast of Thousands who recorded with a young Stevie Ray Vaughan, and his friendship with Jimmie Vaughan on the set of Great Balls of Fire. Stephen also talks about his band L.A. Slugs, his film writing work with musician David Byrne, and we listen to Stephen tell many other great tales. When he’s not listening to Shubert, Haydn, or Nine Inch Nails, he is probably busy recording fascinating stories for his podcast The Tobolowsky Files hosted by David Chen at /Film, which is a spin-off of his outstanding storytelling movie Stephen Tobolowsky’s Birthday Party. Stephen also has a new e-book out called Cautionary Tales.

035 – Tip Of My Tongue: Cecilia Populus

Cecilia Populus is the editor of the music magazine On the Tip of My Tongue (formerly of Ears and Mouth), which also used to be the name of the music performance and interview show on San Francisco Channel 29, Public Access Cable TV that she produced and directed. MLR talks to Cecilia about the trials and tribulations of running a public access TV show, sharing with us lots of great stories from that time. The show was recently cancelled due to lack of funding, but featured local Bay Area talent and beyond such as:PC Munoz and the Amen Corner, The Devlins, Garrin Benfield, Wire Graffiti , Lisa Mandelstein, Paul Manousos, ItsAWhale, Lane and the Badass Chicken Bones, Simon Stinger, and The Church. 034 – D-Rock: Derek Theron

Derek Theron is a singer-songwriter from Boston MA, and a two-time ”Billboard World Songwriting Contest” award winner. He is the guitar player and vocalist for the rock band “6S”, with Mike Sedani (bass) and Dave Perry (drums), named after the number of a rented studio room – as it rhymed with “success”. Derek’s songwriting vision expands to the theatrical, and spectacular, and he is quoted as saying to his band “guys – haven’t you ever heard of a band called Queen?”. Expanding the definition of rock music beyond its limits, it is no wonder why Derek won two awards for his songwriting craft. Derek is now focusing his talents on writing music for hire, offering his eager ear to listen to those who want to put their dreams into a song. Derek has the chops, just listen to this interview and hear some samples of his creative work!

033 – Shine (J)on: Jon Herington

Jon Herington is regarded as the “guitarist for the stars”, playing with notable greats Steely Dan, Boz Scaggs, and Madeleine Peyroux. In his youth his high school band opened up for Bruce Springsteen, and he went on to study jazz and classical music composition in college. He was awarded a national Endowment for the Arts grant to study jazz under the late great Harry Leahey, and later he studied with John Coltrane’s teacher Dennis Sandole. Jon eventually made his way to Indianpolis where he played jazz with many talented musicians, and began earning a living doing both live jazz gigs and recording session work playing on advertising jingles and records. Jon returned to NY and began playing guitar on broadway musicals – including in the rock opera Tommy, and Hairspray. In 1999, Jon landed that magical gig in the sky, becoming the lead guitar player for Steely Dan. He also is the frontman for his own Jon Herington Band and his latest album Shine (Shine Shine) is availble now on cdbaby and itunes.

032 – Moon Hooch

Moon Hooch is a Brooklyn based collaborative trio featuring Mike Wilbur and Wenzl McGowen on tenor saxophone, and James Muschler on drums. They write their songs as electronic music, and then perform them using acoustic instruments. This approach produces music that is a fascinating combination of house, dance, drum and bass, jazz, world and classical music that inspires people of all ages to be happy, and in many cases, to get up and dance! They frequently play in the New York City subway, reinvigorating the weary traveler, and gaining a lot of positive attention.

Bobby Joe Ebola and the Children MacNuggits. Part Two – Interview with Dan Abbott (guitar, vocals) and Corbett Redford (vocals), the talented musical comedic duo who make up the band, who have reformed after a 10 year hiatus. Today you could easily make comparisons to Tenacious D or Flight of the Conchords, but Bobby Joe Ebola were mixing folk, rock, pop & punk music with dark lyrics and creating their own unique brand of “pretty songs about awful things” long before these acts were popular. In part two of this interview, MLR talks with Dan and Corbett about their musical and comedic influences, their long hiatus (albiet with several quasi reunion benefit shows), and triumphant return in 2010. Armed with a new EP “Freaky Baby”, and full length album “F”, the band hit the road in a nation-wide tour to promote their wares. They are busy working with several directors on music videos for their new album, and more tours are planned for later in 2011.

Bobby Joe Ebola and the Children MacNuggits. Part One – Interview with Dan Abbott (guitar, vocals) and Corbett Redford (vocals), the talented musical comedic duo who make up the band, who have reformed after a 10 year hiatus. Today you could easily make comparisons to Tenacious D or Flight of the Conchords, but Bobby Joe Ebola were mixing folk, pop, rock, and punk music with dark lyrics and creating their own unique brand of “pretty songs about awful things” long before these acts were popular.

In part one of this interview, the two discuss the origin of the band, and how hard it was to get shows while fighting the “novelty band” stigma. It was so bad the local all ages club known as 924 Gilman (The “Alternative Music Foundation”) wouldn’t even book them, so out of necessity they founded their own record label S.P.A.M. Records with friend and fairly regular backup singer John Mink (aka John Geek). They also created and booked their own festival “Geekfest“, had a few of their songs also appearing on the Dr. Demento show,and went on to achieve legendary underground and cult status performing over 1000 local and national gigs. In time they even began headlining the very club that said they were “to alternative” to play.

Powell St. John was in the Waller Creek Boys (with a young Janis Joplin) while at the University of Texas in the early 60′s. He went on to form the St. John the Conqueroo, wrote songs for the 13th Floor Elevators (featuring Roky Erickson), and helped to found the San Francisco band Mother Earth with Tracy Nelson. In the 70′s he took a break from professional music and went on to raise a family, but was inducted into the Texas Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005 where he has picked up his musical career. He is currently playing with the band The Aliens. We sit down with Powell and his wife Toby and talk about his musical, artistic and life journey. This is part two of the interview with focus on his hiatus from music, his artwork, his induction into the Texas Music Hall of Fame, and his recent musical career.

Dirty Power is a hard rock band from San Francisco that builds upon a solid musical foundation, taking from all the great influences of the past and molding their own new and exciting music. Drawing from bands like AC/DC, Motorhead, Black Sabbath, they mix in a little Cheap Trick and Def Leppard and finally apply a nice dose of Thin Lizzy into their sonic stew. Dirty Power is currently recording their second album with Jack Endino, who said that their first album, which he also recorded, was the best thing he was worked on since Nirvana’s Bleach -and I full heartily agree! Dirty Power play the Bottom of the Hill in San Francisco on Sat June 19th at 9pm.

Scott Warder, musician and film maker, talks about his musical roots, and what led him to want to make films. He tells us the story of the making of his documentary about the San Francisco music scene in 1999 when many bands were struggling to find places to play as clubs started closing due to noise ordnances, and zoning laws. Scott resides in Spokane WA, where he has worked on the sets of several films, most recently “Wrong Turn at Tahoe” and “Give ‘Em Hell Malone”.
