Lawrence Genova is a singer/songwriter who was born in the Philippines, raised in Hawaii, spent 6 years in the US Air Force, and now resides in the San Francisco Bay Area. He’s playing the clubs, and making a name for himself with his songs which cover personal, political, and cultural topics. We talk to Lawrence about his musical influences, his experiences abroad, and we get to listen to him perform several of his songs. John Montagna is a professional bass player out of Brooklyn New York. John talks to MLR about session work, supporting live acts like Alan Parsons, Todd Rundgren, Denny Laine, and his involvement in the Godfrey Townsend band supporting the Happy Together tour, and Hippiefest. Danny Lobell, the great host of Comical Radio, comedian, and part time concert security guard, talks music with MLR. We discuss the tragic death of Danny’s friend Harvey Pekar, the impact he had on Danny’s life, especially with respect to his love of jazz music. Recorded the day of Pekar’s death, we get to listen to a moving tribute by a personal friend. Danny also tells us about all the great musical guests featured on his Comical Radio show, including Sean Lennon, Aviv Cohn, Andrew W.K., and Supercute, and how music has shaped Danny’s life. Kylie Wakefield, his girlfriend, posts an entertaining blog called “Living with Lobell” – check it out for another look into the life and times of Danny Lobell.

018 – The Road Diaries

John Montagna, a professional musician, describes what life is like on the road during his stint as the house band bassist on the Happy Together tour through a series of road diaries. John Montagna is a Brooklyn native, he has logged thousands of road miles while touring with acts like Alan Parsons, Todd Rundgren, and former Wings guitarist Denny Laine. He has recorded with several artists, and has released four independent solo CDs showcasing his talents as composer, multi-instrumentalist, arranger, and producer.

Rob McCann started out studying music, and playing in bands in the Las Vegas area. He eventually moved to Austin and found his own voice as a solo artist under the moniker Trainwreck in Sarasota. Rob tells us his musical story, and we interweave samples of his songs from his new EP Something to Call My Own along the way. Rob is also responsible for creating a new intro for Music Life Radio which debuts on this episode.

016 – Dirty Power

Dirty Power is a hard rock band from San Francisco that builds upon a solid musical foundation, taking from all the great influences of the past and molding their own new and exciting music. Drawing from bands like AC/DC, Motorhead, Black Sabbath, they mix in a little Cheap Trick and Def Leppard and finally apply a nice dose of Thin Lizzy into their sonic stew. Dirty Power is currently recording their second album with Jack Endino, who said that their first album, which he also recorded, was the best thing he was worked on since Nirvana’s Bleach -and I full heartily agree! Dirty Power play the Bottom of the Hill in San Francisco on Sat June 19th at 9pm.

Marc Maron, comedian, and host of WTF Pod, talks music. Marc had a string of gigs at the legendary San Francisco club Purple Onion May 10th-12th, home to many famous comedians and garage/punk rock bands, and was able to swing by Music Life Radio for an interview. Marc entertains with stories of his favorite gigs, his love of music, and we get to hear a little of his own guitar playing (which is really good!)

Nick V is one half of Party Crashers, a hip-hop duo based in Oakland CA that defy classic boundaries. Party Crashers mix quirky lyrics and head nodding beats, with a wild stage presence and alluring personalities. Nick V discusses his musical partner DJ Expel, the importance of themes, Hyphy music, and he spins some great gig stories. Also featured is a video companion piece where Nick V shows us how he makes his beats, and the importance of 8 sided die in his music making process. His current projects are as producer with the Press Rewind Collective, and recording a follow up to the brilliant Party Crashers debut album.
