078 – Art of Life: Lynnee Breedlove

Lynnee Breedlove (aka Lynn Breedlove) is a visionary who has long been shaping revolutionary art. Lynnee was the front-person of the first American out dyke punk band, Tribe 8, which promoted queer, transgender, multiracial, and working class visibility. Lynnee went on to become a notable solo performer, and toured the world with the one-person performance show “Lynnee Breedlove’s One Freak Show: Less Rock, More Hilarity”. In 2009 while on tour, Lynnee’s mother had a stroke, leading Lynnee to retire from the tour schedule and begin to provide care giving service for mom.

Now Lynnee has found another way to provide community service, as the founder of Homobiles which is a noncommercial, 24/7, queer car service for the LGBT community, as well as others around San Francisco who need safe, dependable rides. Lynnee talks to MLR’s Erik Core about punk rock, sobriety, the evolution of self, work on the Breedlove memoirs, the importance of service, and finding our own role in the current world of shared economies and community-based giving. The pending memoirs combine both Lynnee’s roots as a queer punk rock anarchist, and Lynnee’s moms’ life which includes growing up in Nazi Germany, and the interrelation of those two worlds. Lynnee is also the author of Godspeed (now a movie) and One Freak Show.

077 – The Plastic Arts: Kyle Terrizzi

Kyle Terrizzi is a San Francisco Bay Area singer songwriter who performs under the moniker The Plastic Arts. Kyle talks to Music Life Radio about his background, growing up in Tucson, AZ, his move to the Bay Area, and how he dealt with a serious bout of depression. We also discuss his musical achievements, including his first full length release entitled Academy Clonez which has won unanimous praise from both local and nation press. We hear Kyle perform live tracks from this album throughout the interview.

Kyle also runs Shutup Songwriters, a music collective which includes a weekly audio/video podcast and a recurring video series featuring in-depth conversations and live performances with some of the brightest lights of the San Francisco Bay Area music community and beyond.

Amy Rose, Doug Briney, and Josey Milner are all up and coming country music artists managed by Michael Stover of MTS Management group. We listen to each artist tell their story in three separate mini profiles, and listen to songs from each one.

Amy Rose is a Canadian country powerhouse vocalist, who grew up in Barrie, Ontario, Canada, where she began her singing career at the age of 5. Part down-home country girl, part sophisticated musical veteran, Amy Rose has already earned a reputation for being one of Ontario, Canada’s best-known secrets. Amy’s first album, One Special Girl, was released independently, when she was 13. On the strength of this album, she landed a spot on Dorian Baxter’s Gospelenium Tour, opening for Joni and Cathy Twitty, the daughters of her then-idol, Conway Twitty. She has since gone on to win over the hearts of fans and critics, and has received many accolades from several Country Music associations. Doug Briney is both a musical artist and a pastor in Anchorage, Alaska, although he grew up in Southern California. He began like so many other musicians, singing in church. His first solo was when he was two years old .In college he had the opportunity to sing with a gospel quartet and travel all over the western half of the USA. He also had the unique opportunity to sing with the San Diego Opera Chorus. After graduating Doug went on and has spent the next 23 years leading worship in churches and pastoring. Josey Milner is 17-year-old country music artist, former teen rodeo and pageant princess, and honor student. Growing up on a small farm in Missouri, at age 7, she began barrel racing at local rodeos, making the rodeo arena her first stage. She started singing the National Anthem at her youth rodeos, eventually graduating to performances across Missouri and Kansas. These performances led to the decision for her to hang up her spurs and follow her dreams of country music fame. In December 2012, Josey released her new single, “Not Pretty Enough,” which also kicked off an anti-bullying campaign, with Josey as national spokesperson for Angels and Doves. 074 – Bay Area Music Collective: Starita

Michael Starita is a lifelong musician with over 15 years of experience as an engineer and producer. He started his career at the famous Hyde Street Studios in the late 90s learning from many of the Bay Area greats. Moving to EDNET, Starita had the pleasure of being the ISDN engineer for clients such as Rick Rubin, Sting, Warner Bros, and Universal Motown. He went on to Dolby for 5 years until he decided to go back to doing what he really loved…making records. In 2010, Starita became co-owner of Faultline Studios where he has played and worked with some of the industry’s top artists. Josh Almond of Music Life Radio talks with Starita about his musical journey, and his latest venture, a community based project called Bay Area Music Collective that aims at making The Bay Area a music destination again.

073 – Carletta Sue Kay: Randy Walker

Randy Walker is the vocalist for the band Carletta Sue Kay, where he takes on the persona of front woman Carletta, adopting the name of his cousin who served time for attempting to fire bomb her ex-boyfriend’s apartment. He has a four octave vocal range, and writes songs that are brilliantly moving, often humorous, and a little bit unsettling. Randy talks about his upbringing in Fontana, CA, home to the Hell’s Angels, Mexican Mafia, and Sammy Hagar. Randy describes his early life singing in church, his experience with musical theater, recording vocals with one of his favorite bands, The Magnetic Fields, and why he chose to perform as Carletta Sue Kay. We also talk about their debut album, Incongruent.

072 – Sensitive Badass: Bucky Sinister (2/2)

Bucky Sinister is a poet, self-help author, and a comedian. He’s also a published journalist with focus on film reviews, and he’s written a few short stories. Erik Core interviews Bucky about his move from the mid-west to the Bay Area to hang out with the beat poets and punk rockers, his recovery from drugs and alcohol, his unconventional approach to writing self-help books, and his natural progression to the world of comedy. This is part two of two episodes.

Poetry: He counts nine chapbooks, and four books of poetry, and one album. Most of his poems are about drugs and alcohol.

Comedy: He currently participates in a weekly show at the Dark Room called The Business. Most of his jokes are about drugs and alcohol.

Self Help: He has a very unconventional take on the world of 12 Step recovery, which led to him writing two books, Get Up and Still Standing. He’s a staunch atheist but also a strong proponent of the higher power part of 12 Step, and doesn’t see a conflict there. All of the self help books are about drugs and alcohol.

070 – Relic of the Modern World: Kurdt Vanderhoof

Kurdt Vanderhoof is a musician well known as the guitarist and songwriter of the pioneering heavy metal band Metal Church. Sometimes referred to as the other “Curt” from Aberdeen, Washington, he has played in many groups including The Lewd, Hall Aflame, Vanderhoof, and Presto Ballet. In all aspects of his music, he strives for an organic and pure sound, relying on musicianship and real instruments to craft his songs. We talk with Kurdt about his early days in Aberdeen, his move to Seattle to join the punk band The Lewd, how Metal Church was formed, and why after the first two Metal Church albums he began to get interested more in production and songwriting than live performance, We also talk about his latest project Presto Ballet, a throwback to 1970’s progressive rock combining elements of Yes, Rush, and Kansas, among others into new blend of progressive rock.

TeaganIsm is a punk rocker, model, and performance artist in Oakland, California. She grew up in Portland, Oregon, then moved to the Bay Area to live in the punk rock community warehouse known as HAZMAT where she befriended many folks, including local Oakland Pyrate Punx, and soon began performing at punk rock shows and events with her own style of burlesque and punk rock pole dancing between bands. We talk to TeaganIsm about her background, musical interests, her performance art, her life, and listen to some tracks from her favorite bands.

068 – New Mission: Hermann Lara

Saxophonist and composer Hermann Lara is a product of the San Francisco’s jazz sound and tradition. Born and raised in the City’s vibrant Mission District, his musical credits range from performances with the local funk group Stymie & the Pimp Jones Luv Orchestra and stints with the Ray of Light Theatre Company to engagements with salsa legends Paquito Guzman and Lalo Rodriguez during salsa’s hey day. A 20 year veteran of the casual and weekend circuit, he breaks out on his own as leader and solo artist with his debut CD New Mission featuring 6 time Grammy nominee guitarist, Mike Stern. New Mission weaves together musical stories and themes which serve as tributes to the City’s iconic entertainment past & presents melodic commentaries based on the composer’s experiences as a musician and worker in America today.

Approaching his second full decade in music, the 40 year old offers his keen sense for musical styling and a full offering of improvisation filled jazz compositions with rhythmic settings based in Brazilian rhythms such as the Partido Alto to a New Orleans second line. The album covers fusion and groove based jazz and more traditional post bop tunes to a playfully, quirky ballad which are sure to impress. New Mission is a strong freshman outing from an experienced musician.

Alexandra Starlight started her musical career in the punk rock bands The Daggers, and later moved to The Holograms in 2004. She then formed The Hollywood Harlots, which Sugarbuzz Magazine described as the “gritty spawn of The New York Dolls” blended with the “dirty girl appeal”…of The Runaways, where she quickly earned the reputation as the female Iggy Pop for her stage antics. Her new project returns her to the music she loved while growing up, sultry Rhythm and Blues, and good old Rock and Roll. Her 5 song EP presents a fresh spin on classic American music from the 1970s. Alexandra Starlight (vocals), and Zachary James (guitar), of Alexandra and the Starlight Band, talk with Music Life Radio, and play a couple of acoustic numbers in the studio.

Antonia Vai is a 24-year old singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Sweden, well-established on the music scene of Stockholm. She has been called a “Bohemian Soul Diva”, mixing the elegance of a pop star, with the free spirit of a hippy, and she has is clearly been influenced by folk. Focused on storytelling, shaped by rhythms and unique melodies, every song turns into a journey.

In September 2012 she released her debut album “Lovers and Prophets“, immediately followed by a second album “Dirt From When the Earth Was Flat” (available on Amazon, iTunes, and Spotify).

Antonia shares her story with MLR, discussing her influences, her passion for stories, working within the Stockholm music scene, and we get to listen to several song from her two debut albums.

Dominique Leone wears many hats, has only a few faces, and has composed hundreds of songs. He is a classically trained musician from Texas who now operates out of San Francisco. He’s a songwriter and producer, with more than a slight command of pop history and theory, and has used these skills as a music reviewer for several publications. Advancing from critic to composer, his music could be considered ”pop” with the occasional dash of “prog”, “conceptual art” or really good tv theme song. He´s one of a growing number of college-educated musical auteurs with more than a slight command of pop history and theory chops, and writing songs for joyous, infatuated (or over saturated) people. Jack Conte is a working musician who has had quite a bit of success via YouTube with his Video songs which have a couple of rules: 1. What you see is what you hear. (No lip-syncing for voice or instruments), 2. If you hear it, at some point you see it (meaning that there are no hidden sounds). He is also part of the California Indie Duo Pomplamoose with Nataly Dawn. They, too, make videosongs of their originals as well as quite a few renditions of some other peoples songs, including Beyonce’s Single Ladies, Michael Jackson’s Beat It, and many more. You’ve heard their music in commercials for Toyota and Hyundai. Josh Almond interviews Jack about his music, videos, on working with others, and how this is a great time to be a musician in the age of the Internet.

Penelope Houston, lead singer of the San Francisco punk band the Avengers, and successful solo artist, has released a new solo album entitled On Market Street. We talk to Penelope about her early punk roots including when her band opened up for the Sex Pistols at Winterland, her expansive solo career, the re-release of the Avengers “Pink” album, and we listen to tracks from On Market Street. Penelope has been back on tour with the Avengers, as well as performing shows in support of her latest solo album. Kathy Peck is co-founder of Hearing Education Awareness for Rockers aka as H.E.A.R, a non-profit volunteer organization dedicated to preventing hearing loss and raising awareness of the real dangers of repeated exposure to excessive noise levels from music which can lead to permanent, and sometimes debilitating, hearing loss and tinnitus. Kathy talks about her first band The Contractions, an all-female San Francisco punk band formed in 1979. She also discusses the creation of H.E.A.R after she suffered her own hearing loss when her band opened up for Duran Duran at the Oakland Coliseum in 1984. We talk about all the great work H.E.A.R. has done over the years, the operation to restore her hearing, and the class action settlement she co-led that resulted in wheelchair access and assisted listening devices at all movie theaters nationwide. Kathy also discusses her recent publishing company Monima Music that she started with her husband David Denny (who used to play guitar in the Steve Miller Band), and their work together on film scores such as Neon Sky and A Fierce Green Fire.

Robert Pielke, author of Rock Music in American Culture – the Sounds of a Revolution, talks about his book which investigates rock music from a philosophical perspective.
We discuss several of the concepts used in the book, including how a cultural revolution succeeds, and examine two prominent symbols of the revolution: Elvis as the negation of the traditional values of the 50’s, and the Beatles which affirm the new social changes of the 60’s. We also talk to Bob about his love of rock music, which spans early folk to modern metal, discuss some of his favorite new artists, and talk about his other books including his new science-fiction, alternative history, time travel, double first contact trilogy called A New Birth of Freedom. Bob is a retired professor of philosophy and the author of numerous scholarly articles and books. He lives in Claremont, California.

Geoff Robinson is best known as the lead guitar player for the epic Seattle grunge band Blood Circus. They were one of the first bands on Seattle’s Sub Pop record label, playing with bands such as TAD, Nirvana, and Soundgarden back in the late 80′s. In part two of the interview, Geoff talks about their first and only American tour, and how they broke up at the end of it. Why they later reformed for the movie Hype!, and how they continued to play rock music under the names of Pine Monkey and Cowboy Inhaler long after the Seattle scene broke apart. We also get a glimpse into what the former members are doing now.

Steve Ritchie is a pinball game designer, working at Stern Pinball. He is a Coast Guard Vietnam veteran, and has played in the rock bands Sweet Asylum and Legs Diamond in his early life. In 1976 he walked through the doors of Atari looking for work, and was soon creating his own games. His designs are legendary, and he has been attributed with several innovations in the world of pinball. His latest, and perhaps greatest creation to date, is the pinball game based on the rock band AC/DC. He has also worked on the video games Defender, and Mortal Kombat. Panelists include architect Mark Cavagnero, whose projects include the new SFJAZZ Center; Kurt Graffy, Associate Principal at ARUP’s acoustics lab; five-time Grammy nominated musician and producer; Wayne Wallace; and moderator, John King of the San Francisco Chronicle. A brief audience Q & A follows the panel discussion. This program is presented in partnership with AIA San Francisco. Lisa Vestal, Chief Curator, Office of Exhibitions and Programming at the San Francisco Public Library provides the introductions, Q&A, and closing remarks, and got us the permission to use this broadcast on Music Life Radio!

Erik Core interviews Kate Knox about her role as an organizer for the international punk rock festival BOBFEST. The BOB stands for Bremen – Germany, Oakland – California USA, and Bath – England and every couple of years the festival rotates between these three cities. Folks come from all over to get together and enjoy lots of live music, attend events like picnics and art shows, and help raise money for friends in need. The festival is organized by committee which coordinates the venues, schedules the bands, sells merchandise, and handles other logistics necessary for putting on a major event. Kate Knox has been helping to organize the festival since its inception in the mid 90′s.

Cecilia Populus is the editor of the music magazine On the Tip of My Tongue (formerly of Ears and Mouth), which also used to be the name of the music performance and interview show on San Francisco Channel 29, Public Access Cable TV that she produced and directed. MLR talks to Cecilia about the trials and tribulations of running a public access TV show, sharing with us lots of great stories from that time. The show was recently cancelled due to lack of funding, but featured local Bay Area talent and beyond such as:PC Munoz and the Amen Corner, The Devlins, Garrin Benfield, Wire Graffiti , Lisa Mandelstein, Paul Manousos, ItsAWhale, Lane and the Badass Chicken Bones, Simon Stinger, and The Church. Derek Theron is a singer-songwriter from Boston MA, and a two-time ”Billboard World Songwriting Contest” award winner. He is the guitar player and vocalist for the rock band “6S”, with Mike Sedani (bass) and Dave Perry (drums), named after the number of a rented studio room – as it rhymed with “success”. Derek’s songwriting vision expands to the theatrical, and spectacular, and he is quoted as saying to his band “guys – haven’t you ever heard of a band called Queen?”. Expanding the definition of rock music beyond its limits, it is no wonder why Derek won two awards for his songwriting craft. Derek is now focusing his talents on writing music for hire, offering his eager ear to listen to those who want to put their dreams into a song. Derek has the chops, just listen to this interview and hear some samples of his creative work!

Jon Herington is regarded as the “guitarist for the stars”, playing with notable greats Steely Dan, Boz Scaggs, and Madeleine Peyroux. In his youth his high school band opened up for Bruce Springsteen, and he went on to study jazz and classical music composition in college. He was awarded a national Endowment for the Arts grant to study jazz under the late great Harry Leahey, and later he studied with John Coltrane’s teacher Dennis Sandole. Jon eventually made his way to Indianpolis where he played jazz with many talented musicians, and began earning a living doing both live jazz gigs and recording session work playing on advertising jingles and records. Jon returned to NY and began playing guitar on broadway musicals – including in the rock opera Tommy, and Hairspray. In 1999, Jon landed that magical gig in the sky, becoming the lead guitar player for Steely Dan. He also is the frontman for his own Jon Herington Band and his latest album Shine (Shine Shine) is availble now on cdbaby and itunes.

Moon Hooch is a Brooklyn based collaborative trio featuring Mike Wilbur and Wenzl McGowen on tenor saxophone, and James Muschler on drums. They write their songs as electronic music, and then perform them using acoustic instruments. This approach produces music that is a fascinating combination of house, dance, drum and bass, jazz, world and classical music that inspires people of all ages to be happy, and in many cases, to get up and dance! They frequently play in the New York City subway, reinvigorating the weary traveler, and gaining a lot of positive attention.

Part Two – Interview with Dan Abbott (guitar, vocals) and Corbett Redford (vocals), the talented musical comedic duo who make up the band, who have reformed after a 10 year hiatus. Today you could easily make comparisons to Tenacious D or Flight of the Conchords, but Bobby Joe Ebola were mixing folk, rock, pop & punk music with dark lyrics and creating their own unique brand of “pretty songs about awful things” long before these acts were popular. In part two of this interview, MLR talks with Dan and Corbett about their musical and comedic influences, their long hiatus (albiet with several quasi reunion benefit shows), and triumphant return in 2010. Armed with a new EP “Freaky Baby”, and full length album “F”, the band hit the road in a nation-wide tour to promote their wares. They are busy working with several directors on music videos for their new album, and more tours are planned for later in 2011.

Bobby Joe Ebola and the Children MacNuggits. Today you could easily make comparisons to Tenacious D or Flight of the Conchords, but Bobby Joe Ebola were mixing folk, pop, rock, and punk music with dark lyrics and creating their own unique brand of “pretty songs about awful things” long before these acts were popular.

In part one of this interview, the two discuss the origin of the band, and how hard it was to get shows while fighting the “novelty band” stigma. It was so bad the local all ages club known as 924 Gilman (The “Alternative Music Foundation”) wouldn’t even book them, so out of necessity they founded their own record label S.P.A.M. Records with friend and fairly regular backup singer John Mink (aka John Geek). They also created and booked their own festival “Geekfest“, had a few of their songs also appearing on the Dr. Demento show,and went on to achieve legendary underground and cult status performing over 1000 local and national gigs. In time they even began headlining the very club that said they were “to alternative” to play.

Powell St. John was in the Waller Creek Boys (with a young Janis Joplin) while at the University of Texas in the early 60′s. He went on to form the St. John the Conqueroo, wrote songs for the 13th Floor Elevators (featuring Roky Erickson), and helped to found the San Francisco band Mother Earth with Tracy Nelson. In the 70′s he took a break from professional music and went on to raise a family, but was inducted into the Texas Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005 where he has picked up his musical career. He is currently playing with the band The Aliens. We sit down with Powell and his wife Toby and talk about his musical, artistic and life journey. This is part two of the interview with focus on his hiatus from music, his artwork, his induction into the Texas Music Hall of Fame, and his recent musical career.

Dirty Power is a hard rock band from San Francisco that builds upon a solid musical foundation, taking from all the great influences of the past and molding their own new and exciting music. Drawing from bands like AC/DC, Motorhead, Black Sabbath, they mix in a little Cheap Trick and Def Leppard and finally apply a nice dose of Thin Lizzy into their sonic stew. Dirty Power is currently recording their second album with Jack Endino, who said that their first album, which he also recorded, was the best thing he was worked on since Nirvana’s Bleach -and I full heartily agree! Dirty Power play the Bottom of the Hill in San Francisco on Sat June 19th at 9pm.

Marc Maron, comedian, and host of WTF Pod, talks music. Marc had a string of gigs at the legendary San Francisco club Purple Onion May 10th-12th, home to many famous comedians and garage/punk rock bands, and was able to swing by Music Life Radio for an interview. Marc entertains with stories of his favorite gigs, his love of music, and we get to hear a little of his own guitar playing (which is really good!)
